Box Score
The Bruins men's soccer team dropped their fourth straight as the team fell to Spartanburg Methodist College 2-0 on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.
"We came out with some good pressure defensively and dominated possession on the back line, but we just couldn't get anything going in the attacking third," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We weren't very patient and just kept forcing things when we should have been combining more. We need to make sure we are getting numbers up offensively to create open looks."
The Bruins came into the match after falling to Montreat College 3-0 on Tuesday night. The team was looking to bounce back as they took the pitch in front of their hometown fans.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins held possession but struggled to move the ball into the attacking third. Defensively, Danyon Moore and Tommy Aker stood strong as they matched the Pioneer forwards step for step. The Bruins had a few chances in the first half as Andrew Peterson and Jesse Rush both got good looks on frame but the score remained 0-0.
The Pioneers found took advantage of a golden opportunity in the 19th minute after Bruins' keeper Isaac Landry made a brilliant save on a point blank shot but the rebound fell right to the feet of Daquan Gadsen who finished the play to put SMC up 1-0. Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Pioneers continued to push the ball towards the Bruins net while BJU struggled to create quality scoring chances. Despite several corner kick opportunities, the Bruins went into the break trailing 1-0.
As the second half began, the Bruins came out aggressive as they looked to find the equalizer. The team had some flashes of brillance offensively, but they weren't able to capitalize as shots sailed wide or were blocked by defenders. With the match beginning to wind down, the Bruins knew their chances were slipping away to draw even. The Pioneers then put the game out of reach as Jordan Scovel bent a beautiful header past the outstretched arms of Isaac Landry to give SMC a 2-0 lead. Despite their efforts to get on the board, the Bruins couldn't find the back of the net as they fell 2-0.
"There are some things we did really well on the field tonight," Coach McCormick said. "The goals didn't come but there are certainly positives we can take away."
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 1-5 on the season. Next up, the team will be on the road Tuesday night for a region matchup with Toccoa Falls College.
