The Bruin defeated their rival Pensacola Christian College on Friday night in the Davis Field House. Bruin nation was out in full voice as over 3,000 fans cheered the Bruins to their sixth victory in the last seven games.
"When you are at home, it's important to take that initial crowd energy and just expand off of it," Bruins senior guard Justin Matthews said. He finished with 30 points in the win as the Bruins climb back to .500 on the season at 10-10.
The Bruins stormed out of the starting gate as Justin Matthews threw down a dunk for the game's first points. The crowd went crazy and the atmosphere was electric. The Bruins fell behind 6-12 and things were looking a little bleak but Justin Matthews again answered the call with a pair of threes to tie the game.
The Eagles rode the shooting of Dakota Platt as the sophomore forward scored 19 first half points. As the half wore on, it seemed as though the Eagle runs were answered with either a dunk or a three-pointer by the Bruins. The Bruins took off at the end of the first half and finished with a 50-41 lead going into the break.
The Bruins entered the second half and began to push behind big effort on the defensive end. The Bruins forced the Eagles into 20 turnovers, and only allowed 5 threes. Offensively, the team was powered by Nate Ellenwood's 16 2nd half points as the sophomore guard turned in one of his best performances of the season finishing with 26 points and 12 assists. Although the Eagles put together several runs, the Bruins came up with big baskets down the stretch to win 98-81.
While Justin Matthews and Nate Ellenwood carried the team offensively, Dustin Killough added 17 points and Quez Fisher finished with 10. The Bruins finished the night shooting 65% from the field and 53% from beyond the arc. Next up, the Bruins will be back in the Davis Field House Saturday afternoon as they play in another region game against Johnson University of Florida. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
