Bruins Rout Eagles 88-54 for 6th Straight Win

Box Score

Dustin Killough notched 20 points and nearly a double-double as the Bruins defeated the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles 88-54. The Bruins improve to 13-10 overall and have now won six straight games. The team also preserves their perfect record in region play and improve to 5-0 on the season. "Everyone's just been playing a huge roll in our success," Killough said. "We're winning and we love to play with each other on the court."

The Bruins and Eagles traded baskets to open the game as the score remained close in the opening minutes. After an Eagles timeout, Nate Ellenwood was fouled and made both free throws to put the Bruins up 10-7. Justin Matthews then deflected a shot and Killough was able to knock down a three to extend the Bruins' lead to 13-7. The Eagles answered back with a three of their own, but back-to-back baskets by Jayson Barnhart and Matthews put the Bruins up 18-10. Killough landed another three to extend the lead to 21-12 but the Eagles clawed back with a 6-0 run which cut the Bruins' lead down to 21-18.

As the first half was coming to a close, Matthews scored to extend the Bruins' lead to 31-22 and keep the Bruins on a 6-0 run. The run was cut short when Toccoa Falls scored to make it a seven-point game at 31-24. Barnhart fueled the Bruins for the remainder of the half. Barnhart made three of four free throws and a bucket at the end of the half to give the Bruins a narrow 41-32 advantage at halftime. Despite the lead, Coach Uwarow said the team needed to play better in the second half. "We played like we've been off for a couple of days," Coach Uwarow said.

Dustin Killough continued to carry the team as he scored two buckets which increased the Bruins lead to 45-34. Later on in the half, buckets by Barnhart and Fisher helped boost the Bruins to a 55-40 lead forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Following their timeout, the Eagles scored, but Ellenwood scored off a steal by Matthews to keep the Bruins' going strong. The Eagles scored after that play to cut their deficit to 58-44. Sparked by Fisher and Matthews, the Bruins went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead over the Eagles to 20 at 64-44. Scoring was back and forth over the next couple of possessions, but the Bruins were able to hold their dominant 20 point lead at 70-50. The Bruins then put the game out of reach with a 12-0 run which furthered their commanding lead to 82-50. The Bruins win was capped off by an acrobatic and-one as Robert Horn brought the hometown crowd to its feet with a highlight finish. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins won handily 88-54.

"A lot of our guys had a lot of rebounds and it wasn't just our bigs crashing the getting the boards," Coach Uwarow said. Coach also praised Killough for his performance tonight. "I don't ever have to worry about what I'm going to get out of him," Coach Uwarow said. "He just did a lot of things tonight when we weren't clicking on offense. He led like a senior is supposed to lead tonight."

Justin Matthews and Dustin Killough led the Bruins in scoring with 20 points apiece. Nate Ellenwood and Jayson Barnhart also scored in double digits, scoring 11 and 16 respectively.  Jayson Barnhart led the team in free throws made, completing 10-13.

With the win, the Bruins have now won six straight and nine of their last ten games. The Bruins will travel to Asheville, North Carolina on Tuesday for their next game of the season against Warren Wilson College.
