The Bruins bounced back in a big way on Friday night as the team defeated Trinity Baptist College 94-57 in Jacksonville, Florida. This was the first region game for the Bruins in the 2017-18 season as the team improves to 5-9 on the year.
"I am incredibly proud that our best game came after our worst game," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Every player contributed in a big way tonight. On top of that, we've all been fighting sickness this week so it was good to see us battle through it and play the way we did."
The Bruins jumped out in a big way right from the tip as Justin Matthews threw down a dunk to help the team take a 18-7 lead. The Bruins attacked the paint and were able to control the tempo and flow of the game. Still, the Eagles were hanging around as the Bruins led 24-18 with under ten minutes to play in the half.
As the half was coming to a close, the Bruins relied on the post play of Quez Fisher and the big man delivered with seven straight points as the Bruins closed out the first half on a 27-9 run to take a 51-27 lead into the half. The Bruins shot an impressive percentage in the half as the team finished 57% from the field and 71% from beyond the arc.
In the second half, the Bruins kept the pressure on as they continued to drive through the lane for points. Luc Muhirwa was one of six Bruins in double figures on the night as he finished with 11 points and an two-handed slam as the Bruins continued to stretch the lead.
As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had put together a strong performance on both sides of the ball to come away with a 94-57 win. "We know we'll be in for a tough test tomorrow," Coach Uwarow said. "We get a chance to simulate region tournament play by playing early tomorrow afternoon. We'll have to find a way to dig deep to play against a good Johnson team."
Dustin Killough led the Bruins with 19 points while Justin Matthews and Nate Ellenwood each had 17. Quez Fisher and Jayson Barnhart scored in 12 points each as the Bruins move to 1-0 in region play. Next up, the Bruins will finish their Florida road trip on Saturday afternoon with another region contest against Johnson University of Florida.
