The Bruins basketball team set a new program best on Thursday night as the team defeated Toccoa Falls College 91-66 for their 9th straight victory. The win marks the longest winning streak in program history as the Bruins improve to 16-10 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in region play.
"It was key for us to execute our game plan tonight," Bruins forward Jayson Barnhart said. He led the Bruins with a dominant performance scoring 29 points and 4 rebounds while shooting an incredible 88% from the field. "We played lock down defense tonight and shared the ball which helped us get the win."
The Bruins came into the game on fresh legs as the team was able to get a little break between their last game which was a win one week ago. The Eagles and Bruins met earlier in the season with the Bruins capturing a 88-54 win in the Davis Field House. With back-to-back region games on the slate for this week, the Bruins looked to keep up their winning ways as they took the court.
The two teams traded baskets to begin the game as the lead changed several times before the teams tied at 11-11. Jayson Barnhart had a near perfect half for the Bruins as he scored 16 points on 8-9 shooting to spark a 10-0 run at the midway point of the half as the Bruins took the lead. His impressive play fueled the rest of the Bruins offense as the team continued to stretch their lead. Still, the Eagles stayed within striking distance as the half ended with the Bruins leading 39-26.
"We played the first half like we'd been off a week," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "We can't ease into games particularly defensively like we did tonight but we were able to get great contributions from all our players."
As the second half began, the two teams traded baskets early before back to back three pointers by Dustin Killough and Justin Matthews helped the Bruins build a 54-38 advantage. Killough continued to dominate from three-point range as he scored 8-straight points for the Bruins to help put the game out of reach. Despite several short runs by the Eagles, the Bruins completed a strong overall performance as they defeated Toccoa Falls College 91-66.
"We aren't perfect but we are hard working and hungry," Coach Uwarow said. "I love how someone different steps up every night. To me, that is Bruin basketball. I look forward to seeing who will step up for us next as we finish region play on Saturday."
Barnhart led the way for the Bruins behind 14-16 shooting from the floor. Dustin Killough and Nate Ellenwood each had 14 points while Justin Matthews finished with 12. The Bruins shot an impressive 55% from the field including 41% from three-point range. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road on Saturday as the team battles Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida.
