The Bruins men's soccer team fell 2-0 in Saturday's preseason match against NCAA DIII opponent Averett University in Danville, Virginia.
"We were shell shocked early on," said interim Head Coach Greg Fulton. "This is probably one of the hardest opponents we'll play all season. I'm proud of how the boys responded, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we grow and stick together this season."
The Averett University Cougars got off to a quick start with a goal from an early corner kick in the 3rd minute. Soon after Averett University was awarded a penalty kick, but Bruins goalkeeper Bradley Tart was able to make a crucial save keeping the score 1-0.
After one more goal from the Cougars 15 minutes into the first half, play evened out. The Bruins worked hard to level the score, but ultimately were unable to capitalize.
"Tonight's match was one of those games where we take positives and we learn from the negatives," said Fulton. "Facing adversity helps us learn and this is the benchmark for us to know where we're at and what we have to do going into the season."
The Bruins head home and will have a few days of practice before traveling to Central, South Carolina on Thursday where they will begin the regular season with a 7:00 p.m. match against Southern Wesleyan University.
