The Bruins men's track & field team opened the 2022 season on Saturday as the team competed in the Susan Rouse Invitational hosted by Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina. It was a good showing for the Bruins as several athletes had solid performances in their events.
"The team did exceptionally good today," said Head Coach Ken Roach. "The first track meet of the season is always used to shake away the offseason rust. It was great to see the team run loosely and competitively today."
The Bruins would compete against Southern Wesleyan University, North Greenville University, Columbia International University, and other NCAA DII, DIII and NAIA schools.Â
Â
The 5000 meter race would kick off the running events for the Bruins where Marc Johnson and Seth Cordes would compete against eight other runners. Johnson would finish with a time of 17:33.48 and Cordes would be close behind at 18:25.28.
Next up would be the 1500 race where Joseph Grassmid would finish in the middle of the pack with a time of 4:28.76.
As the fields events got underway, Jake Rumfelt and Samuel Hadley would compete in flight one of the Javelin throw. Rumfelt's distance of 37.53 meters would put him in the top spot of that heat.
Â
Back on the track, the 400 meter race would get underway. Andrew Sarver would toe the line in the final heat. As he rounded the final corner, he kicked it into high gear to pass a Truett McConnell University runner and finished with a time of 56.04.
Three Bob Jones runners were on the track for the 800 meter race and senior Michael Steurer finished in the top five at 2:03.67.
Â
In the final heat of the 200 meter race, Luke Fressel would edge out teammate Nathaniel Crowley with a time of 23.53.
Â
In a field of over 20 runners, Douglas Stone would finish fifth with a time of 9:18.23 in the 3000 meter race. Teammate Sol Shafer would cross the line with a time of 9:33.88.
Â
The Bruins would finish up the day with a solid performance in the men's 4 x 400 meter relay race with the Bruins "A" team crossing the line with a time of 3:49.25.
