Two Bruins Hit National Qualifying Standards at Electric City Invite

The men's track & field team competed at the Electric City Invite hosted by Anderson University where Joe Grassmid and Sol Shafer hit the NCCAA National Qualifying Standards in their events. In addition to national qualifiers, the team also saw several personal bests throughout the day.

Competing among 700 athletes representing over 20 schools, the Bruins continued to show improvement as the team looks to build through the rest of the regular season.

"It's great to see the improvements continue," said Head Coach Ken Roach. "It can be tricky during this time of the season because it is so important to go into the remaining schedule with confidence. At this point, the team still has more in the tank and that is perfect as we continue to gear up for nationals."

In his first time competing in the steeplechase this season, Joseph Grassmid crushed the 3000 meter event with a time of 10:24.19 making the national qualifying time.

Douglas Stone and Sol Shafer competed in the 5k with Stone finishing 6th and Shafer finishing five seconds behind in 9th. With Stone already qualifying for nationals, this was Shafer's time to shine as he came away with a 19 second personal record and qualifying time of 16:00.46.

Marc Johnson ran his first 10k for the Bruins today and missed out on a qualifying time by just six seconds.

Other personal records for the Bruins include an eight second PR by Ryan Heying in the 1500 meter run as well as Jeremiah Cox in the event as well. Andrew Sarver ran a 54.56 in the 400 for a personal best and to put him in the top-5 in the Bruins record book.

At the end of the meet, the men's team finished 11th out of 19 teams. Full results from Saturday's meet can be found here.

"I couldn't be more happy with the overall direction and how this team responds each week. The way they use their accomplishments for God's glory is exciting to watch," said Roach.

The track & field teams travel back to Hickory, North Carolina next week to compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne Outdoor Open.
