Bruins Track & Field Begin the New Season

The men's and women's track & field teams traveled to Winston-Salem to begin their season yesterday to compete in the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-Off at JDL Fast Track.

Daniel Garian and Josiah Mackey both competed in the men's shot put where Garian threw for 13.34 meters and Mackey threw 7.8 meters.

John Vance had a busy first meet as he competed in the long jump soaring 5.66 meters and then later ran in the 200m race where he ran a time of 25.64. 

Along with Vance in the men's 200m, Leo Adames ran a 24.93, Michael Leonard ran 25.19 in his first ever meet, followed by Kyle Williams finishing at 25.86.

Five Bruins competed in the women's 200m and they all ran well. Melody Davis led the Bruins efforts running it in 28.51 seconds which is a Bruins program best. Freshmen Briana Felter and Caroline Roland both had good times of 29.00 seconds and 29.65 seconds in their first meet as a Bruin. Emily Walton finished in 29.08 seconds and Grace Bailey finished in 33.06 seconds.

Several of the 200m sprinters also competed in the 60m sprint. Misha Gray led the way for the men's team running a 7.35 which is a new personal best closely followed by Leo Adames finishing at 7.37 which is also a personal best for him as well. To round out the Bruins efforts, Kyle Williams finished at 7.64 seconds and Jeremiah Medrano at 7.70 seconds.

The women did well in the 60m sprint all finishing under 10 seconds. Briana Felter led the way with a 8.63 second finish shortly followed by dual-sport athlete Mia Marks with 8.87 seconds. Itzel Ponce finished in 9.50 seconds in her first race followed by Grace Bailey at 9.52.

Freshman Robert Ulsh competed in the 60m hurdles race where he finished in 9.85. Ulsh later competed in the 4x400m relay that featured him, Medrano, Leonard, and Gray. They finished at a good time of 3:43.06.

The women's 4x400m relay featured Bethany Grachus, Gracie Roland, Melody Davis, and Emily Walton where they finished in 4:28.67. This was the first meet for Grachus and Roland.

Ian Flynn and Kate Amato both competed in the 600m where Flynn finished in 1:33.58 and Amato in 2:00.99.

Joel Batres-Mena and Botond Berces highlighted the men's 800m race where Batres-Mena ran a quality time of 2:05.55 and Berces finished in 2:23.14.

Kristen Dodds represented the Bruins in the women's 800m racing to a time of 2:49.24.

The only Bruins to run the 3000m (3k) were the Jones sisters, Courtney and Lauren where Courtney raced a quality time of 12:11.05 in her last race as a Bruin and Lauren couldn't quite finish inside the cutoff time.

Lastly, four Bruins ran in the men's 1 mile race. Marc Johnson ran in a heat different than the other three and finished with a time of 4:54.31 finishing off his illustrious Bruins career. Evan Seaman, Trenton Goldsmith, and Daniel Kyle all ran in the same heat where Seaman led the way with 4:44.39, Goldsmith with 4:53.34, and Kyle with 5:03.91.

Overall, it was a very good first meet for the Bruins with lots of room to improve and excitement of this new season growing. They have a little bit of time off now heading into Christmas break, but they compete next on January 18 at the Mondo College Invitational which is also held at JDL Fast Track.
