Bruins Struggle to Close Games Against MACU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Bruins baseball team finished up their series against Mid-Atlantic Christian University today with a doubleheader. Both games were tight all the way to the end, but the Bruins fell in both matchups. In game one of the doubleheader, the Bruins lost 7-5 and in game two they fell again, this time in extra innings, 11-10.

"We played a three game set this weekend producing 35 hits, five home runs, 24 runs scored, and our pitching staff, with more than half consisting of new freshman, produced 16 strikeouts," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "The big takeaway from this weekend's losses is learning that they have to keep the throttle down and never let up until the game is over or teams with grit will steal the win!"

The first game started out with a scoreless first inning. The Mustangs struck first in the second inning with a run taking 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Bruins responded with two runs of their own to take the lead. The Bruins followed that up with two more runs in the top of the fourth. In response, the Mustangs picked up one more run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the score down to 4-2.

Heading into the fifth inning, the score remained the same as neither team was able to put a man all the way around. The top of the sixth also remained scoreless for the Bruins, but the Mustangs tied it up in the bottom of the inning. The top of the seventh gave the Bruins and 5-4 lead, but the Mustangs responded with the tying run and then the walk off two-run home run to take the lead and the win 7-5.

Right away in game two, the scoring started with both teams getting on the board early. The Bruins scored a run in the first, but quickly found themselves behind as the Mustangs scored two in the bottom of the first inning and then another four in the second. The Bruins quickly responded with five runs in the third inning to tie the score at 6-6.

Going into the fourth, the Bruins put up two more runs and the Mustangs scored another one themselves to make the score 8-7. It was a quiet fifth inning as neither team was able to score. In the bottom of the sixth the Mustangs tied it back up 8-8.

The seventh was once again scoreless for both teams and that meant extra innings. The Bruins wasted no time in eighth as they scored two runs to go up 10-8, but the Mustangs responded with a two-run home run to tie it back up 10-10. In the top of the eleventh, the Bruins were able to get a man on base, but were unable to bring him home. The Mustangs capitalized on that and scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the inning to finish the game on top 11-10.

Up next, the Bruins will play in their home opener against Concordia University (Ann Arbor, MI) Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader and again on Monday a single game. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
