The Bob Jones University track and field teams wrapped up the regular season of competition on Friday and Saturday in Boone, North Carolina as they participated in the App State Open.
"We had some great performances at the meet," said Head Coach Ken Roach. "This team has worked really hard this season, and this was a great cap to the regular season. I feel like we performed well in some events and showed some weakness in others as we head to nationals. I am really proud of this team and am happy we were able to put together a great season."Â Â
The meet got underway Friday evening as two Bruins toed the line in the 10,000 meter race. It was a record breaking night as Liesl Heinz raced for 24 laps around the track to a new school record of 40 minutes and 17 seconds, shaving nearly two minutes off the previous school record. Her time put her 11
th in the nation in the NCCAA. Teammate Cora Gagne also raced as she finished her first ever 10k with a time of 47:58.
The next day, Evan Seaman and Marc Johnson took to the track for the men's 10,000 meter run. Seaman finished just 22 seconds behind first place as he hit a new personal best with a second place time of 33 minutes and 18 seconds. Johnson was right behind him as he stopped the clock at 35:30.
Liesl Heinz made was back to compete as she faced tough field of competitors in the mile. She finished 10
th out of 21 runners with a time of 6:02.41.
Mia Marks just missed out on a personal best in the 100 meter, as she sped down the straightaway to a time of 13.94 seconds. On the men's side, Luke Fressel and Misha Gray took on the 100 meter preliminaries. The competition was tight as Fressel sprinted to a seventh place finish of 10.98 seconds. Gray came in less than a second later with a new PR of 11.43. Fressel advanced to the finals where he finished at 10.99.
Alyssa Marks broke her own school record in the 400 meter, with a new best time of 1:01.45. Teammate Joy Hast also competed in the 400 for the first time in her collegiate career. Trenton Goldsmith and Kyle Williams were neck and neck as the pair finished less than a tenth of a second apart in the men's race.
Ainsley Zimmerman and Elisabeth Farley both competed well in the 800 meter event. Seven Bruins took to the track in the men's 800. Andrew Sarver and Joel Batres-Mena both narrowly missed out on personal bests as they finished back-to-back at 2:03.09 and 2:03.92. Isaac Vera Cruz, Levi Gerbitz, Trenton Goldsmith and Justin VanDen Berghe also competed in the event.
After competing in the 100 meter earlier in the day, Misha Gray was back to race in the 400 meter hurdles. He completed his lap in 1:01.08.
Alyssa Marks and Emily Walton represented the Bruins in the 200 meter with Marks finishing ahead at 28.04 and Walton at 29.28. Luke Fressel sped to a top-ten finish in the men's 200 with a time of 22.53 before teammate Leonardo Moto came in at 23.71.
The meet concluded with the 4x400 as Emily Walton, Joy Hast, Kristen Dodds, and Alyssa Marks put on a performance with a solid time of 4:32.72. The men's relay team of Leonardo Moto, Joel Batres-Mena, Isaac VeraCruz, and Andrew Sarver finished second overall with their best performance of the year at 3:36.21.
