The Bob Jones University Bruins men's cross country team made history winning its 10th straight NCCAA DII National Championship and becoming the fifth program in college sports history to win 10 straight national championships.
"The men's team was challenged coming into this race to make history," Head Coach Ken Roach said. "We always have a huge target on our back for nationals, and the way this team channeled their emotions and kept themselves disciplined for such a dominant performance is a testimony in unwavering grit."
As the teams got to the starting line, nervousness filled the air as two teams were determined to de-throne the Bruins from their reign. The Bruins, however, took control of the race right after the starting gun. Judah Nash and Joel Batres-Mena bursted to the front group while James Baer was close behind. Levi Gerbitz, Daniel Kyle, Luke VanDenBerghe, and Jacob Doshier all packed together and ran well controlling the pace of the middle pack.
At the 5k split, it was clear the Bruins were well on their way to making history. Judah Nash was able to pass a couple runners in the final two miles to come in second place overall with a personal best time of 27:18. Following close behind was Joel Batres-Mena finishing in fourth place overall with a time of 27:54. James Baer finally had the breakout race he has been waiting for all season long as he came in fifth place with a time of 28:10. One of the key stories of the day was Jacob Doshier. In his first season of cross country ever after being a state champion wrestler in high school, Doshier ran a three-minute personal best to come in seventh place with a time of 28:26. To round out the top five was Levi Gerbitz finishing in 10th place with a time of 28:46.
Five Bruins finished in the top ten.
Daniel Kyle and Luke VanDenBerghe closed the Bruins efforts coming in 12th and 18th place with times of 29:07 and 29:41.
The Bruins had a team score of 27 which is one of the best team scores in program history. They now stand as the fifth program in college sports history in any sport at any level to win 10 straight national championships.
"Our strength is the ability to lean into each other with prayer and faith while putting everything on the line for God's glory," Coach Roach said. "I am so incredible proud to be part of this wonderful team."
