The Bruins track and field teams delivered some great times in their first indoor meet of the season at the new and improved JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Once known for being a flat track, JDL is now banked allowing for more speed on the curves of their 200 meter track. After learning of the news, the Bruins were very excited to begin their season in a familiar location against some top NCAA DI talent.
"The team focus was to open the indoor season with greater momentum than previous seasons. We had opportunities to race and challenge several events if we brought the right mental approach, and I think we did that throughout the day." Â
To open the day, Josiah Mackey competed in the men's shot put and recorded a top throw of 9.65 meters.
On the track, Bri Felter led the women's efforts in the 60 meter dash finishing with a strong time of 8.69 seconds. The men's 60 meter group delivered one of the deepest performances of the day with Will Stark sprinting to a swift 7.15 seconds to lead the Bruins. He was followed by a wave of personal bests as Leo Mota crossed in 7.22, Misha Gray in 7.28, Kyle Williams in 7.56, and Jeremiah Medrano matching his personal best with a time of 7.66 seconds.
The distance squad made their presence known in the men's 3k. Freshman Judah Nash impressed in his first-ever 3k clocking a time of 9:24. He was closely followed by James Baer at 9:46, Jacob Doshier at 9:47, and Daniel Kyle finishing at 10:10.
The Bruins also saw strong showings in the 400 meter races. On the women's side, Melody Davis set a new personal best with a 1:03.8, and Emily Walton followed with a 1:07. This was Walton's first meet back after missing extended time with injury. The men's 400 meter group was led by Stark again, who capped his standout day with a blazing personal best of 49.8 seconds. Harold Wood finished in 53.8, Kyle Williams in 57.3, and Matthew Carver rounded out the effort in 59.6 seconds.
In the 800 meter race, Kate Amato and Liz Farley both began their season with quality times that they can build on of 2:50 and 2:54. The men posted a set of strong mid-distance results. Joel Batres-Mena led the way with a time of 2:03, followed by Harold Wood running 2:09, Jacob Doshier 2:10, and Luke VanDenBerghe finishing in 2:23.
The Bruins showed sharp efforts in the 200 meter sprints. Felter and Davis both clocked 28.20 seconds for the women, while the men's group continued their momentum from the 60 meter dash. Gray ran 23.5 narrowly ahead of Mota's 23.56, and with Medrano finishing at 23.97 seconds.
In the men's mile, the Bruins men were stacked up again. All in the same heat, Nash, Baer, Kyle, and VanDenBerghe were back on the track. Judah Nash finished first for the Bruins after a great surge at the end with at time of 4:51. Baer and Kyle came next narrowly missing out on a sub-5 minute mile with a time of 5:01. VanDenBerghe closed it out with a solid time of 5:20.
Lauren Jones was the last one on the track for the Bruins and the only Bruin to compete in the 5k. She ran really well but could not beat out the DI standard cutoff time.
