Several athletes from the the women's and men's track & field teams had the chance to represent the Bruins at the NCCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships this past weekend at Cedarville University.
"We wanted to go into this meet with a conquer mindset and prove to ourselves that we can push to greater limits," Head Coach Ken Roach said. "I think we did that while also representing the school well among our competitors."
The Bruins weekend started Friday evening with several competitors. Robert Ulsh began the team's efforts competing in the 60 meter hurdles. He finished in 9.56 seconds just half a second from the top eight. Next up was the men's distance medley relay where the Bruins had to adjust their game plan a little bit due to sickness. Daniel Kyle ran in place of Joel Batres-Mena in the 800 meter section of the race. With Trenton Goldsmith, Misha Gray, and Evan Seaman, the Bruins were still able to run a good time of 11:14.Â
To close out the night, both the women's and men's team raced in the 4x200 meter relay. Gracie Roland, Briana Felter, Bethany Grachus, and Melody Davis raced to a time of 1:55 just one second off from the school record. Next for the men was Kyle Williams, Jeremiah Medrano, Michael Leonard, and Robert Ulsh who closed out the night with a 1:39.
Saturday gave several Bruins the chance to compete in individual events. Daniel Garian started the day in the men's shot put. He threw 13.00 meters and finished 10th overall. Next for the Bruins was the men's individual mile where Trenton Goldsmith and Daniel Kyle competed. Goldsmith came in first with a time of 4:53 followed by Kyle at 5:01. Coach Roach was very pleased with those performances coming off of the DMR the night before. Kyle Williams ran next in the open 200 meter race with a time of 25.84 seconds. To close out the individual events was Evan Seaman in the men's 3000 meters. He was also coming off of the DMR from the night before and pushed through with a quality race and quality time of 9:11.Â
Much like the 4x200 meter relay, the Bruins also had teams represented in the 4x400m relay. For the women's team it was back with Grachus, Roland, and Davis, but this time joined by Emily Walton. They ran very well finishing with school record 4:23 and also finishing 7th overall. In the men's relay, an unfortunate injury took place to cause the team to not finish. Even with the unfortunate ending, the Bruins are pleased with their performance this weekend and look to take that momentum into the outdoor season.
They begin their outdoor season on March 7 when they compete at the John Hunter Classic hosted by Columbia International University.
