Incredible Weekend for the Bruins at the John-Hunter Classic

The women's and men's Bruins track & field teams had a great weekend at the John-Hunter Classic hosted by Columbia International University.

"Our team showed real guts this weekend," Head Coach Ken Roach said. "They ran hard, threw hard, and jumped great giving everything they had. It wasn't just about the results; it was about the effort and determination they put in for each other and for Bob Jones University. I'm very proud of this team."

Friday:

Starting with the women's javelin, the Bruins were represented well with Abigail Woo, Grace Bailey, and Mia Marks all representing the Bruins. Woo led the way for the Bruins finishing seventh overall throwing 26.69 meters. Bailey threw 23.41 meters and finished 13th overall. Marks, in her first ever javelin competition, threw 18.83 meters.

Men's javelin went as well as anyone could imagine. The All-American Josh Landry did his thing and won. Finishing first overall, he threw for a personal record of 54.03 meters.

There were only a couple running events Friday evening and the Bruins did very well! Melody Davis, Briana Felter, Gracie Roland, and Liz Farley all competed in the 200 meter sprint. Davis finished at 27.77 seconds which is second best in program history! Briana Felter was right behind her at 28.00 seconds. Roland and Farley followed at 28.48 seconds and 31.80 seconds.

The Bruins were well-represented in the men's 200 meter sprint. Misha Gray came through with a time of 23.65 seconds coming in 26th overall out of 50 total runners. Leo Mota was right behind with a time of 23.72 seconds. Michael Leonard and William Stark both had quality races with times of 23.78 seconds and 24.04 seconds.

One of the highlights of the night came under the lights in the men's 5k race when Evan Seaman set a huge personal best. An extremely fast race helped him push through for a crazy time of 15:45.

Saturday:

The throwers started the day again for the Bruins. Josiah Mackey set a personal record today in the shot put throwing 9.55 meters.

In the men's discus, Josh Garian finished 10th place overall throwing the disc 35.15 meters.

John Vance represented the Bruins in the long jump where he jumped 5.74 meters in his second attempt.

After a night's rest, Felter and Roland were back on the track for the Bruins in the women's 100 meter dash. They finished one right after the other where Felter finished in 13.43 seconds and Roland at 13.58 seconds.

It was a similar story in the men's 100 meter dash. Gray, Mota, and Stark were all back on the track and all had great races. Gray finished at 11.35 seconds and Mota at 11.37 seconds. Stark closed it out at 11.70 seconds.

Joy Hast and Lauren Jones highlighted the women's 1500 meter race shortly after. Hast finished 12th overall with a time of 5:26.92 followed by Jones at 5:38.63 finishing at 15th overall.

Three runners represented the Bruins in the men's 1500 meter race. James Baer finished with a great time of 4:38.69 after an aggressive start off the line. Levi Gerbitz and Luke VanDenBerghe finished at 4:51.71 and 4:58.26.

There were also three Bruins represented in the women's 800 meter race. Kristen Dodds came through first at 2:41.52 followed by Kate Amato at 2:45.27 and Hannah Cohen at 2:47.29.

Robert Ulsh raced in the 110 meter hurdles race and after a small wipeout on an early hurdle, he shook it off and finished the race in 20.76 seconds. He showed a real source of strength to be able to finish.

In the women's 400 meter dash, Melody Davis, Gracie Roland, and Liz Farley were all racing again. Davis finished at 1:04.14 which was a personal record. Roland, in her third event of the meet, finished at 1:05.08. Farley closed it out at 1:11.37.

Michael Leonard was the only Bruin in the men's 400 meter dash. He had a quality race finishing at 53.55 seconds.

Finally, to close out the meet for the Bruins, Trenton Goldsmith ran in the men's 3k steeplechase. He held strong throughout the race and finished 6th overall with a personal record time of 10:38.43.

Full results from the weekend can be found here.

As a first meet, this went as well as the Bruins could have imagined. Many personal records and top-five program times were made. They look to carry this kind of momentum throughout the season. They next compete in the 49ers Classic on March 20-22 hosted by the University of North Carolina - Charlotte.
