Box Score
The sun was high above Alumni Stadium for an afternoon match between the BJU Bruins and the Florida Christian College Suns. With a slight breeze blowing, the weather was perfect for competition. The Bruin women were coming off an impressive 5-0 win at home against Johnson University, and were looking to keep up the impressive play as they welcomed the Suns. Florida Christian College has had a difficult season as the team has allowed eighty-five goals while only scoring two.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins continued to show the improvements they have been making over the last few games. The Bruins controlled the ball and made good crisp passes around the Suns' defense. It didn't take long for the Bruin offense to net their first goal as
Spencer Martin scored off a beautiful pass from Lauren Peek to put the Bruins on the board first. What followed was a barrage of shots and goals from the Bruins as they kept up the offensive intensity throughout the first half.
Lauren Peek netted back to back
goals and
Spencer Martin,
Sarah Porch,
Victoria Musselman and
Tessie Estrella all scored to make the score 7-0 at the half.
"We had great ball movement in this game," Coach Carmichael said. "They really came out patient which allowed us to set up our offense really well."
The second half yielded more of the same as the Bruin women clearly dominated possession of the game and continued to create great offensive opportunities. Jocelyn Reemstma scored back to back goals at the start of the second half, and Lauren Peek netted her third goal of the game in the 52nd minute giving the Bruins a 10-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Deanna Howard scored on another assist by Lauren Peek to make it 11-0. As time began to wind down, Elisabeth Stolvoort and Dani Lee each scored as the Bruins never looked back in a 13-0 shutout of the Suns.
"This season has been all about finding the right fit," Coach Carmichael said. "We have a lot of players who can finish and be great scorers. I think we finally found the right fit for our team these last two games."
This is the second straight shutout for Tori Anderson and Shelley Hawk, but the more impressive play was in the Bruins defense as Caitlyn Lehman and company yielded only one shot on goal the entire game. The Bruins will look to continue their impressive play as the team will travel to Tennessee on Tuesday for a match with Johnson University.
