When this inaugural season began for the Bruin women there were many difficulties in learning the speed and pace of playing at the intercollegiate level. In their first four games, the Bruins only managed one goal and had allowed 11. Despite the early setbacks, the team continued to push through the adversity and improve game by game. The Bruins seem to have found their niche as the team has drastically improved over the last two games. The Bruin women had not yielded a goal since Clearwater scored on them in the second half on October 6th. The team has outscored their two previous opponents 18-0 and looked to continue that impressive play in a road match against Johnson University.
The Bruins came out strong from the opening kickoff and continued to display the impressive intensity they have shown in the past two games. The team continued to show their offensive prowess in maneuvering the ball up the pitch to create offensive rushes on net. Shot after shot was taken on goal as the Bruins continued their relentless offensive attack. The Bruins' attack was firing on all cylinders as the team netted goal after goal. When the buzzer signaled the end of the first half, the Bruins had a commanding 7-0 lead. Freshman Lauren Peek continued her impressive scoring run with two first half goals, giving her 5 in the last two games. Spencer Martin also scored two goals and Deanna Howard, Tessie Estrella and Annie Ubben each scored one.
“We have a lot of girls creating opportunities,” Coach Carmichael said. "We are getting goals from many different players and having great off-the-ball movement."
The Bruins pulled back their offensive attack for the second half and worked on fundamentals and passing so as to not run up the score. The team executed crisp passes and really controlled the pace of the second half. Sarah Porch netted a goal late in the second half, and Johnson University scored late to prevent the Bruins from completing their third straight shutout. The final horn secured the 8-1 victory for the Bruins and continued the impressive winning streak.
“The girls played really well tonight and possession was strong,” Coach Carmichael said. "We ended up switching postitions around a lot in the second half and they all did great."
The Bruins have now won three straight games and have outscored their opponents 26-1 in those games. The team will have a few days off to relish this win before welcoming Tennessee Temple University on Saturday.
