The Bruin women took the field on Saturday afternoon and were looking to keep up their winning ways. The team welcomed the Tennessee Temple University Crusaders who had been playing strong as of late winning three of their last four matches. The Bruins came into the match with a three-game winning streak, having outscored their opponents 26-1 in those games.
It was a perfect afternoon for a game as the weather was a very pleasant 60 degrees. The sun was shining and not a cloud was in sight as the two teams took the field. From the opening kickoff, the Crusaders came out very physical and were called on several fouls in the first few minutes. The Bruins were able to maintain their composure and executed great possession throughout the first half. The offense was generated several great opportunities as the team began to pressure the net.
In the 18
th minute of play, Rebecca Luttrell fired a rocket-shot at Crusaders goalie Donna Bolden who wasn’t able to handle the ball for the Bruins first goal. Five minutes later, Tess Hoskinson scored on a beautiful far post shot to make it 2-0.
“Our system of play allowed us to find the space between the backs which opened up opportunities,” Coach Carmichael said. “We didn’t finish all of those opportunities but we did well.”
At the start of the second half, the Bruins came out poised and controlled and were able to continue to keep the Crusaders from attacking the net. The defense stood strong as the Bruins yielded four shots the entire match. Goalie Tori Anderson made several good saves as the Bruins held off the Crusaders with a 2-0 victory.
“It was a good match,” Coach Carmichael said. “We played really good defense and we created a lot of good opportunities on the offensive side.”
The team has now won four straight games and has outscored their opponents 28-1 in the previous four games. The Bruins will have a few days to rest and recuperate before welcoming Chowan University next Friday night. The Bruins will be having “Senior night” next Friday to thank those seniors who have contributed much in this first season of play.
