Bruins Rally to Overtake Hawks

Team battles back to win fifth straight game

Box Score
The Bruin women came into their match against the Chowan University Hawks having the opportunity to accomplish something that they had not been able to do since beginning their season: reach .500. The Bruins came into their match on Friday night having won their past four games and outscoring their opponents 28-1 in those matches. The night would be even more special as the Bruins honored the three seniors on their team in "Senior Night."

From the opening kickoff the Bruins came out somewhat sluggish as the Hawks took it to the Bruins with their physical style of play. Despite the sluggish play, the Bruins defense stood strong as Caitlyn Lehman and company didn't allow many offensive opportunities on net.

In the midway point of the first half, the Hawks lofted a shot towards Bruin goalie Tori Anderson. As Anderson came out to make the save, she lost the ball in the sun and had the shot deflect off of her hands into the back of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. Despite the attempts by the Bruins for the equalizer, the score remained 1-0 at the break.

“That team clearly outplayed us the first half,” Coach Carmichael said. “We were doing the right things it was just too slow.”

During the halftime festivities, the Bruins honored three seniors on the team. Annie Ubben, Anne Sidwell and Jill Iles were honored during the halftime break for their hard work and dedication to making this first season a success.

As the second half began, the Bruins looked like a brand new team as the team began to play like a team that had won four straight. Within the first few minutes of the second half, Sarah Porch maneuvered her way down the sidelines and fed a beautiful pass across the middle for Victoria Musselman who finished the goal to make it 1-1. Less than 30 seconds later, Porch sailed down the far side of the pitch again. This time however, the Bruin forward sent a beautiful bending shot right over the outstretched arms of the keeper to put the Bruins up 2-1.

“The effort went up and we played much more forward minded,” Coach Carmichael said. “The speed of play went up and we created some great space.”

Later on in the 2nd half the Hawks committed a foul just inside the box setting up Spencer Martin for the PK. Martin bent a beautiful shot into the upper-left portion of the net to put the Bruins up for good. When the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins won 3-1 and stretched their winning streak to 5 games.

“To be down like we were in the first half and come back, that was huge,” Coach Carmichael said. “It just is evidence of the hard these girls work day in and day out.”

With the win, the Bruins are back to 7-7 on the year, and will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University on Monday night.
