The Bruin women had been looking for a spark to get them going after the team had suffered three straight losses in recent weeks. That spark would come as the team welcomed Johnson University to Alumni Stadium on Monday night. The crisp October air made it a cold one for both of the squads on the field.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins were able to take possession and really showed great improvement in their passing tonight. That allowed for good possession and offensive development as the team had several open looks on goal. Their first goal would come in the 17th minute as
Sarah Porch received a beautiful cross from Rebecca Luttrell to break the scoreless tie and put the Bruins on the board first.
The Bruins kept up their relentless offensive attack as the team was able to generate 18 shots on goal throughout the first half. "We changed up some of our tactical strategy for this game," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "That really allowed us to have good attacks on goal which set up good oppportunities."
In the 32nd minute of the first half, the Bruins would strike again as
Lauren Peek netted a goal putting the Bruins up 2-0. Less than 3 minutes later the Bruins notched their third goal of the half on a beautiful display of fancy footwork by
Spencer Martin as she netted her first goal of the season, putting the Bruins up 3-0 at the break.
"We made great improvements in possessing the ball tonight" Coach Chris Carmichael said. "That was the difference in this game. We really controlled the pace which works right into what we've been trying to do."
As the second half began, the Bruins kept up their offensive intensity as the team continued to create offensive rushes on net.
Sarah Porch scored her second goal of the match as she fired a beautiful shot past Johnson goalie Morgan Matthews to put the Bruins up 4-0. The second half continued to be controlled by the Bruins as the ladies made crisp passes and were able to keep the Johnson offense at bay. The Bruins allowed only 4 shots on goal throughout the game and both the offense and defense played a great overall game.
Tessie Estrella put the nail in the coffin as she scored in the 65th minute putting the Bruins up 5-0. As the final horn sounded, the Bruins had snapped their losing streak and came away with a much-needed win at home. Tori Anderson and Shelley Hawk combined for the Bruins' second shutout of the season.
"This win was huge for us," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "I told the girls before the game, that this was the first of many upcoming games that we needed to win. Tonight was just the first step to get us to our goal."
Next up for the Bruin women is an afternoon matchup with Florida Christian College on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
