Koalas Outlast Bruins 81-63

Bruins continue to make small improvements despite loss

The Bruin women faced the Columbia College Fighting Koalas on Thursday night in Columbia, South Carolina. The Bruins were coming off their first win in BJU history after defeating Toccoa Falls 61-47 on Tuesday night. The team is now 1-5 on the season and faced a Columbia College team that was riding a two-game losing streak after starting the season at 2-1.

As the game began, the Bruins and Koalas exchanged baskets with neither team extending much of a lead in the opening minutes. The Bruins continued to show improvement in their offensive attack as Kendra Jeffcott and Kourtney Hoefler were able to take open shots to keep the game close. The Koalas countered and began to apply stronger defensive pressure the Bruin guards which caused turnovers. Slowly the Koalas began to stretch their lead in the first half and the Bruins were not able to generate defensive stops. At the half, the Bruins were down 34-47.

"We just need consistency," Coach LeViere said. "We have times when we play really well and we just need to be consistent in how we play on both sides of the ball."

In the second half, the Bruins slowly cut into the lead, but each time the team would make a run, the Koalas would squelch the rally and extend their lead. The Bruins were not able to cut down on the turnover margin as the team is still learning to make smart decisions on each and every possession. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had lost the game 81-63.

"I am seeing improvement every game," Coach LeViere said. "We just have to keep learning from our mistakes."

Kendra Jeffcott led the Bruins with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Kourtney Hoefler added 16 points and 8 rebounds. Overall the Bruins continued to show signs of improvement as the team continues to gel in their inagural season. Next up for the Bruins is a matchup on Saturday against the Hiwassee College Tigers.
