The Lady Bruins took the court on Friday night against the Point University Skyhawks in a Tip-Off tournament in West Point, Georgia. The Bruins came in having lost their past two games and have shown great adversity in pushing through the growing pains of competing at the intercollegiate level. Coach LeViere has stressed the importance of perseverance and hard work throughout this week of practice, and the women looked to implement their change on the court against the Skyhawks.
From the opening tip, the Bruins looked like a completely different team from the last time they stepped on the court. The team played with poise and control and was able to play good hard-nosed defense all throughout the first half. “There was definite improvement tonight,” Coach LeViere said. “Overall we just played better basketball.” The Bruins matched the Skyhawks point for point and kept the game within striking distance. At the half, the Bruins were down 32-22.
In the second half, the Bruins continued to stick right with the Skyhawks as the two teams went back and forth trading baskets and momentum with each passing shot. As the game neared its final minutes, the Bruins went on a late run and cut the lead to three points with 1:30 on the clock. The team then committed three straight turnovers and was not able to capitalize on the scoring opportunities that were presented to them. The final score was 63-56 as the Skyhawks handed the Bruins their third straight loss.
“Those turnovers were very costly for us,” Coach LeViere said. “We were just a couple of missed shots away from victory.”
Kendra Jeffcott led the Bruins with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Kim Spiecker contributed 11 points and Chalice Pack and Trisha Irving each had 9.
“Overall it was a great team effort,” Coach LeViere said. “We saw definite improvement tonight and we’re going to keep improving.”
With the loss, the Bruins are 0-3 on the year and will take on Reinhardt University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Although the team has lost three straight games, the Bruins continue to show definite improvement and it will only be a matter of time before these ladies begin to put “W’s” into their record.
