Poor second half sinks Bruins

Box Score
The Bruin women entered their game on Saturday afternoon with a 2-10 record. Their most recent loss came on Friday night against Trinity Baptist College. On Saturday, the Bruins welcomed the Montreat College Cavaliers for the final game before the holiday break. The Cavaliers came into the game at 9-3 and Coach Jackson's squad is one of the stronger teams in the NAIA.

As the game began, the Bruins showed they could compete as Kourtney Hoefler and Kendra Jeffcott battled in the paint and grabbed rebounds. Bruins' guard Trisha Irving orchestrated the offense to generate good looks. On the defensive side, the Bruins kept the Cavaliers in check by forcing tough shots and limiting second-chance opportunities. "We played really good defensively," Coach Mike LeViere said. "We had some good looks on offense but we weren't able to take advantage of those opportunities." The Cavaliers and Bruins went back and forth exchanging baskets and turnovers as each team sought to establish momentum. At the half, the Cavaliers had the lead 23-18.

"We play some great teams this year and Montreat is no exception," Coach LeViere said. "Our girls are learning to compete and handle the pressure."

As the second half began, the Bruins began to show fatigue throughout the second half. The Cavaliers capitalized on Bruin turnovers and began to extend their lead. The Bruins only shot 14% in the second half which really hurt them down the stretch. Kaitlyn Clontz and the Cavalier offense began to work the ball and get many open opportunities to score. The game continued to become more and more one-sided in the second half as the Bruins were outscored 30-9 in the final twenty minutes of play. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had lost their second game in two days with a 53-27 loss.

"Fatigue really hurt us today," Coach LeViere said. "To play last night so hard and then really hard again today, we really showed we were tired late in the game. Still we need to take advantage of our open opportunities and our shooting today isn't going to win us a lot of games."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 3-10 on the season and will now have about a month off during the students' holiday break. Several of the Bruin players will have the opportunity to rest up and heal from injury. Coach LeViere is confident in his team's ability to prove over the next half of the season. "What we continue to stress to the girls is to work on things we can control," Coach LeViere said. "If we work on our execution and effort than we can let the results speak for themselves."

Kourtney Hoefler had another double-double on the day with 12 points and 16 rebounds but was the only player to score in double figures for the Bruins. The team committed 24 turnovers while shooting only 20% on the night and 6% from three-point range. The team will have about a month off before their next game at home against Toccoa Falls College on January 12th.
