The Inaugural Game

Bruins Fall to Bears in Home Opener 2-0

It was the perfect night for the inaugural game for the Bruins. The August-heat did not damper the spirits of the 4,000 plus fans who packed Alumni Stadium for the Bruins matchup with the Truett-McConnell Bears. For the first time in nearly 80 years, BJU was facing an opponent in intercollegiate athletic competition. The players fed off of the positive energy given by the Bruin-faithful, namely the Narwhal student section that let their presence be known throughout the evening.

As the game began, the Bruins started off strong and put together several great runs toward the net. As the game wore on however, the Bears began to make several runs towards the net. Tori Anderson would deny shot after shot and ended the night with 16 saves. In the middle of the first half, Anderson's armor would finally break as the Bears capitalized on a beautiful strike by Mallory Reynolds to go up 1-0, which would be the score at the half.

With their backs against the wall, the Bruins responded with several offensive onslaughts throughout the second half. Lauren Peek, freshman forward for the Bruins, had several good shots on goal. Despite the fight, the Bruins would eventually allow an own-goal to make the final score 2-0.

"I am so proud of our team," said forward Lauren Peek. "We didn't give up, and I felt like we keep getting better and better." After the loss, the girls presented Dr. Stephen Jones with the inagural game ball. After that, they jogged and waved to their fans thanking them for their support.

"We are so proud of our girls," said Coach Carmichael. "Their offense and ball control was very much improved tonight and this performance will instill a lot of confidence going forward."

The Bruins will get some rest before hitting the road on Saturday for a matchup with Newberry. Despite the loss, this historical night was something these Bruins will never forget.
