Less than 24 hours after taking the field for their first game, the BJU Bruins found themselves on the road to Newberry College to take on the Wolves. From the outset, the Bruins began to show their fatigue as the Wolves bombarded the net with shots. The Bruins were able to keep the Wolves at bay and took a 0-0 tie into halftime.
"Our positioning and defense was great during the first half," said Coach Carmichael. "Newberry is a very skilled offensive team and they put a lot of pressure on our D."
As the Bruins came out for the second half, the physical play and up-tempo pace left the Bruins exposed and the Wolves took advantage. "We started chasing the game," said Carmichael. "We didn't stay in position and our ball possession was really lacking in the 2nd half."
The Wolves would capitalize on the Bruins defensive lapses as they began scoring goals almost at will. In the end, the Bruins lost 5-0 to Newberry.
"Unlike the other losses, this one was a group effort." said Carmichael. "We just didn't play well as a unit, especially in the 2nd half."
The Bruins had the disadvantage of having to play two matches in two days, and the fatigue was such that it drastically affected their play. Thankfully, the ladies will have a few days to rest and regain their strength before their next match on Tuesday against St. Andrews College in North Carolina.
The Bruins have faced tough competition in their inagural season, and despite their inexperience, the ladies are leaving it all on the field.
