The Lady Bruins stood in shock and disbelief. Instead of making preparations for the extra time period, the Bruins found themselves on the losing end of a 2-1 match against the St. Andrews College. This came on a last-minute goal scored by the Knights handing the Bruins their third straight loss. "This one really hurt," said Coach Carmichael. "We outplayed them through the whole game and then coughed up a goal late to lose it."
The Bruins entered Tuesday's match with an 0-2 record and were facing their third match in the last five days. Despite their fatigue, the Bruins came out strong from the opening kickoff and controlled the pace of the game. The team had struggled in recent games with their offensive output, but on this night, the Bruins would bombard the net with shots as the Bruins tallied 7 shots on goal in the first half alone. Eventually, the Bruins resiliance would pay off as Sarah Porch would net the team's first goal this season to put the Bruins up 1-0 at the half.
As the second half began, the Bruins continued to keep up the pressure on the offensive side of the ball, but St. Andrews goalie Brittany Roberts was up to the task as she made save after save. As the game began to draw closer to full time, the Bruins began to realize they were on the verge of their first win in school history. The Knights would then tally their first goal to tie the game at 1-1. With less than a minute remaining, the Knights would score on a defensive lapse by the Bruins to come away with a 2-1 victory.
"This is a hard lesson to learn," said Coach Carmichael. "These girls need to learn to play strong until the final whistle, but I am proud of the fact that these ladies are taking the things they have learned in training and applying them on the field. We'll be ready for Thursday."
The loss was definitely hard to swallow as the Bruins were close to capturing their first victory. The team has faced a lot of adversity so far this season, as the ladies have played three matches in the last four days. Though they are tired, the Bruins continue to battle and improve with each and every game. Next up for the Lady Bruins is a home game on Thursday against the Freed-Hardeman University Lions.
