The true test of character is shown when a team faces adversity and still keeps fighting. Despite their 0-3 record entering Thursday night's game, the Lady Bruins again took the field for a match against the Freed-Hardeman Lions. The Bruins have been put to the test as the ladies played their fourth match in the last week. As the game began, the Bruins started off slow and began to play a little sloppy."We came out soft tonight," said Coach Carmichael. "You could tell fatigue was a factor, but we came out of the gate slow."
The Lions took advantage of the Bruins fatigue and began to send shot after shot at Bruins goalie Tori Anderson. As the game wore on, Anderson made save after save and continued to be a wall in the net for the Bruins. At the half, the Lions had fired 13 shots on goal but the score remained 0-0.
As the second half began, the Lions continued to keep the pressure on Tori Anderson and eventually the Bruins would yield their first goal early on in the second half on a beautiful corner kick goal by the Lions. "We told our girls time again this week to not give up free corners," said Coach Carmichael. "We have notoriously had trouble with corners this year and tonight it really cost us."
The Bruins were not able to get much going on the offensive end as the Lions D sniffed out any threat made by the Bruins. Sensing a fourth straight loss coming, Coach Carmichael made some adjustments hoping to shake things up and tie the match. The decision would backfire as the Lions would net their second goal of the half as the match ended 2-0 giving the Bruins their fourth straight loss.
"We were just trying to make something happen," said Coach Carmichael. "I am encouraged that we seem to be getting closer and closer each game. We are making improvements which is what we want to see."
The Lady Bruins have continued to improve and face another test on Saturday against Tennessee Temple University. Despite the slow start, fans and players alike must realize that it takes time to build a winning program.
