Lady Bruins Maul Eagles 68-41

Team starts off 2nd half of the season with big win

Box Score
It had been a long while since the Lady Bruins laced up the sneakers and took the court for a game. On Saturday night, the Bruins welcomed the Toccoa Falls College Eagles. The Eagles were 0-9 on the season, and had been defeated by the Bruins 61-47 earlier in the season. The Bruins were coming off a disappointing 3-10 start to their inaugural season, and looked to start off the second half of the season with a win in front of the Bruin faithful.

From the opening tip, both teams showed that they had been on a break as the Eagles and Bruins exchanged turnovers throughout the opening minutes. "You have to expect a little sloppy play coming off of the break," Coach LeViere said. "That happens when you don't play together for a month." Eventually both teams would settle down but it was the Bruins who began to step up their defensive intensity. The team shut down the Eagles offense and used the turnovers to be able to generate a 19-0 run throughout the remainder of the first half. "We're learning how to play as one unit," Bruins' guard Bre Bullard said. "We had trouble at first getting back into the rhythm of the game, but we don't focus on the clock or the score but on working on each play." At the half, the Bruins had a comfortable lead at 32-14.

"We struggled in some areas but we really stepped up our defense," Coach LeViere said. "Although we didn't shoot particularly well, we were able to keep fighting and getting good shots. That to me is a sign of a good team."

As the second half began, the Bruins continued to keep the Eagles in check as Chalice Pack, Bre Bullard and Trisha Irving pressured the offense. Kendra Jeffcott and others battled in the paint, allowing the Bruins to out-rebound the Eagles 42-28. With the clock ticking off the final minutes, the Bruins increased their lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins secured their fourth win of the season in a 68-41 victory.

"I was proud of our effort tonight," Coach LeViere said. "We had some girls really step up, and even though we had somewhat of a poor night shooting we were able to capitalize on defense which helped us out a lot."

The Bruins had four players in double-figures as Kendra Jeffcott led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Bre Bullard added 12 and Kourtney Hoefler and Chalice Pack each added 11.

"We're playing not just to win a game," Bruins' guard Bre Bullard said. "Ultimately our goal is to point to Christ and we try our best to make sure our attitude reflects that on the court."

The Bruins improve to 4-10 on the season and will welcome in Pensacola Christian College next Friday night.
