The Bruins welcomed the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies on Tuesday night. The Bruins were coming off a big 6-0 shutout over Clearwater Christian on Saturday night in which the offense was firing on all cylinders. They would face a tough test in welcoming the Grizzlies who had defeated the Bruins 2-0 in the 2012 season. Georgia Gwinnett came into the match with an 8-4 record. In their most recent match, the Grizzlies fell to Young Harris 2-1. The crisp fall air and clear skies made for a great atmosphere for a game as over 1100 people watched in Alumni Stadium.
From the opening kickoff, the Grizzlies showed their speed and great ball movement as they looked to establish the tempo early. The Bruins were able to counter by playing excellent defense, breaking up runs and generating good transition into the offensive end. In the 7th minute,
Eric Moisant fired a beautiful low shot past the goalkeeper to put the Bruins up 1-0. Although the Bruins were outshot 9-2 in the opening half, the team played smart and held their own against the speedy Grizzly offense.
The Bruins were looking to take their lead into the break, but in the 34th minute,
Juan Giraldo scored off the corner kick to level the score at 1-1 going into halftime. "They are a very quick and skilled team," Coach McCormick said. "Everyone on the pitch is quality for them and if we give them open looks they are going to finish them. We changed up a few things, but overall we put ourselves in position to score goals."
In the second half, the Grizzlies were able to work the ball and generate great looks on net. Despite the barrage of 11 shots throughout the half, goalie Joseph Wooster made great saves to keep the game even. In the 52nd minute,
Martin Lugo scored on a point blank shot to put the Grizzlies up 2-1.
Lugo would score again in the 71st minute with a low shot past Wooster to give the Grizzlies a comfortable 3-1 lead. The Bruins tried desperately to get back into the game and had several great scoring opportunities, but the score remained 3-1. In the 89th minute,
David Burke put the nail in the coffin for the Bruins as he fired a shot past Wooster to make 4-1. The Bruins almost scored off a great chance from Moisant in the final seconds, but the final buzzer handed the Bruins a 4-1 loss.
"This is certainly a team that helps us prepare for regionals and nationals to compete at the highest level," Coach McCormick said. "It's a quality opponent and their speed of play and technical ability is a good challenge for us."
With the loss the Bruins fall to 5-6-1 on the season. The Bruins will welcome Columbia International University on Friday night and Coach McCormick knows his team is excited to take the field for the rematch after CIU's 2-0 defeat of BJU earlier this year.
