Bruins Defeat Stormy Petrels 4-0

Three second half goals fuel Bruins rout of Oglethorpe

The Bruins traveled to Atlanta, Georgia today for a match with the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels. The Bruins were coming off a big road win in a 3-1 victory over Chowan University. The team was 8-4-2 coming into the match. The Stormy Petrels were riding a three-game losing streak and have lost four of their last five matches. The Bruins would be playing without goalie Tori Anderson, and Tessa Hoskinson would play between the pipes for the Bruins. 

From the opening kickoff, the Bruins and Stormy Petrels went back and forth with both teams looking to control the tempo. The Bruins have done well executing combination play in recent weeks, and the team continued to do so in this match with good crisp passing and making quality runs on net. In the 11th minute, Jenn Wise broke away from the Stormy Petrels defense and scored a goal off a well-placed shot to put the Bruins up 1-0.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Bruins continued to battle and look to extend their lead. The team generated 10 shots throughout the first half, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime. 

"We created a lot of space on the attacking side," Coach Carmichael said. ""Our combination work was very good and they were able to create many scoring opportunities."

In the second half, the Bruins took the adjustments given to them by their coaches and continued to pressure Oglethorpe's net. In the 65th minute, Sarah Porch scored a goal off an assist from Caitlyn Lehman to extend the lead to 2-0. Despite the lead, the Bruins continued to work the ball and generate great opportunities on net. In the 81st minute, Becca Luttrell scored off an assist from Spencer Martin to make it 3-0. Minutes later, Luttrell struck again as got a breakaway opportunity and buried the shot past Petrel's goalie Sarah Craig to put the Bruins up 4-0. 

In the final minutes, Oglethorpe fought desperately to get back into the game, but Tessa Hoskinson was great in goal to keep the clean sheet intact. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had won their second straight match with a 4-0 victory.

"Oglethorpe is a very strong opponent and despite the score they played a very good match. Collectively the team played extraordinarily well and worked very hard." 

Becca Luttrell led the way for the Bruins with two goals, while Sarah Porch and Jenn Wise each had one. Spencer Martin and Caitlyn each had one assist for the match. Tessa Hoskinson picked up her first clean sheet of the season as the Bruins have completed 8 clean sheets this season. The team will be on the road again this weekend as they travel to Tennessee for a matchup with Freed-Hardeman University.
