The Bruins basketball team traveled to Columbia, South Carolina for their first road test of the season. They were set to do battle with the Fighting Koalas of Columbia College. The Bruins had won their home opener 64-52 over Johnson University on Friday night. The two teams met twice in the 2012 season with each team getting a victory at home.
From the opening tip, the Bruins and Koalas were aware that the officiating was going to be tight. Both teams had trouble adjusting as many fouls were called in the opening minutes. The Bruins also struggled with turnovers as the team had several mishaps throughout the first half. The team shot just 24% in the first half. The Koalas were able to capitalize on the Bruins mistakes and at the half, the Bruins were down 34-27.
"It was a tough game for us to find a flow," Coach LeViere said. "We had opportunities but just needed to finish better."
In the second half, it was much of the same for the Bruins. Despite their struggles, the team was able to climb back into the game behind the play of Kim Spiecker who had 14 points on the night. The fouls began to take their toll as a total of 68 fouls were called in the game. Five of the Bruins players fouled out of the contest which hurt the team significantly down the stretch.
In the final minutes, the Bruins had several key opportunities to get back into the game, but the Koalas kept the lead. As the final buzzer sounded the Bruins had suffered their first loss of the season 75-62.
Kim Spiecker led the way for the Bruins with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Trisha Irving chipped in 13 points, but the Bruins committed 29 turnovers while shooting a mere 30% for the game. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 1-1 on the season. The team will regroup over the weekend before welcoming Toccoa Falls College to Greenville on Tuesday night.
