The Bruins women's basketball team played their third game in a row on the road as they traveled to Wesleyan College for a matchup with the Wolves. The Bruins have been playing well as of late winning four of their last five games. The Wolves have started the season with an 0-3 record and were looking for their first win as they welcomed the Bruins.
As the game began, the Bruins got quick baskets from Kourtney Hoefler and Trisha Irving to jump out to a 5-2 lead. The team played great on defense, forcing the Wolves to take tough shots. Kendra Jeffcott and Kourtney Hoefler owned the box as the Bruins asserted their rebounding presence on the Wolves. The two teams battled as the game remained close throughout the half. The Bruins got several three pointers throughout the first half from Maggi Ford and Trisha Irving and had a 30-22 lead. From there, the Bruins went on a 15-4 run to close out the half with the lead 44-26.
"They have a very scrappy team that hustles a lot," Coach LeViere said. "We had good shooting in getting good looks to be able to build the lead."
In the second half, the Wolves began to make a small run to try to get back into the game. Brianna Delaney came up with a big second half for the Bruins, scoring 10 of her 12 points in coming off the bench. The Bruins rode the shoulders of Delaney and continued to work their offense to extend the lead. As the half continued, Kim Spiecker knocked down back to back three point shots while scoring 7 straight points for the Bruins. The Wolves tried everything to get back into the game, but the offense was just too strong for the Bruins. The final buzzer ended the game and handed the Bruins their second straight win with a 80-56 victory over Wesleyan College.
"We are happy to walk away with this win," Coach LeViere said. "We got a little sloppy in the second half, but we hustled and played good defense to keep the lead. This was a really good team effort tonight. We're looking forward to the next game."
Four Bruins scored in double figures on the night as Maggi Ford scored 13, Kendra Jeffcott and Brianna Delaney each scored 12 and Kendra Jeffcott had 11. The Bruins outrebounded the Wolves 56-44 in the game while shooting 43% from the field. The team also got some much needed help from the outside in shooting 35% from the floor. With the win, the Bruins move to 6-2 on the season. The team will practice again tomorrow as they prepare to travel on the road again to face Montreat College on Saturday night.
