Box Score
The Bruins were on the road for their fourth straight contest as they traveled to North Carolina for a matchup with the Montreat College Cavaliers. The Bruins have won five of their last six and were riding a two-game winning streak into Montreat with victories over Columbia International University and Wesleyan College. Montreat has started off the year well with a 4-2 record. The Bruins and Cavaliers met once in the 2012 season with Montreat winning 53-27 in Greenville. The Bruins were looking to keep up their winning ways as they took the court at McAlister Gymnasium.
From the opening tip, the Cavaliers came out strong and quickly jumped out to a 12-2 lead. The Bruins struggled to get anything going on offense, and their defensive pressure did little to slow the charging Cavaliers from scoring. Montreat shot 78% from the field in the first half as the Bruins were looking for any way to stop them. The lead became more and more lopsided as the Bruins tried everything to get back into the game. The Cavaliers dominated the paint and the rebounds and couldn't miss in the first half. The Bruins were thankful for the halftime buzzer as the score was 57-33 at the break.
"They played great defense in the first half and they shot the ball really well," Coach LeViere said. "We didn't play horrible, we just didn't play well and that hurt us against a good team."
In the second half, it was much of the same for the Bruins as the team tried to claw their way back into the game. Every time the Bruins would make a short run, the Cavaliers would stop the run and extend their lead. Montreat finished the game shooting 61% from the field and dominated the Bruins on both sides of the ball. The final buzzer handed the Bruins a tough 91-56 loss.
"They executed well and we didn't," Coach LeViere said. "We have to have better interior play and have some players step up for these games. We just didn't play well and we have to play well to be in the mix with a quality team."
Chalice Pack had 11 points on the night and Trisha Irving chipped in 10. The Bruins were outrebounded 39-26 in the game and shot just 32% from the floor. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-3 on the season. The Bruins will have some time to work as their next game is on December 3rd against Columbia International University at home. The Bruins will look to regroup and get better as they continue their second season of intercollegiate competition.
