The Bruins women's basketball team welcomed the Toccoa Falls College Eagles on Tuesday night to the Davis Field House. The team was coming off a 75-62 loss at the hands of Columbia College on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins and Eagles met twice in the 2012 season, with the Bruins capturing wins in both meetings. The Eagles were beginning their 2013-14 season against the Bruins as Toccoa finished 2-20.
From the opening tip, the Bruins came out slow and had trouble keeping possession with some early turnovers. The team shot just 25% throughout the first half, but the defense helped to keep the Bruins in the lead. The Bruins took advantage of their size differential in the post as Kourtney Hoefler and Kendra Jeffcott each helped clean up the glass and get good second chance opportunities for the Bruins to score. Despite losing the turnover battle, the Bruins had a slim 31-20 lead at the half.
"I really thought our defense was pretty solid in the first half," Coach LeViere said. "I felt like the turnovers really hurt us. It seemed like we would get some things going and then commit several turnovers and that just kills you."
In the second half, the Bruins came out strong in the opening minutes knocking down several shots and forcing turnovers to increase their lead. The team shot 54% in the second half, largely behind the transition play in creating easy layup opportunities on fast breaks. The Bruins had several 8-0 and 10-0 runs in the second half, and owned the glass behind Hoefler and Jeffcott's combined 25 rebounds. Toccoa Falls managed 33 rebounds as a team.
With a comfortable lead, the game had a humorous moment as the Bruins' Brianna Delaney secured a rebound and scored on her own basket. She responded by getting fouled on the next play and making both of her free throws. As the game finished, the Bruins had won handily over Toccoa Falls with a score of 76-47.
"We still have to perform better offensively," Coach LeViere said. "We ran the floor well tonight. We did get some open looks and layups but went 2-19 on three pointers. Overall we just need to improve on our shooting and be better than that."
With the win the Bruins improve to 2-1 on the season. Kendra Jeffcott led all scorers with 13 points and added 13 rebounds. Kourtney Hoefler scored 11 points and snagged 12 rebounds. Trisha Irving also scored 10 points for the team. The defense forced 19 turnovers while holding Toccoa to just 25% shooting on the night.
The Bruins will have a few days of rest and preparation as they travel to Truett-McConnell on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
