The Bruins have been on the road for their last four games of the season. Couple that with the nearly week-long Thanksgiving break and the Bruins players were looking forward to playing in front of their home crowd for the first time since November 12th. The Bruins welcomed in the Columbia International University Rams on Tuesday night to Greenville. The Bruins and Rams met earlier this season with BJU winning 83-59. The Bruins suffered a tough loss in their last game, but were looking to keep their unbeaten home record as they welcomed the Rams to the Davis Fiels House.
As the game began, the Bruins came out on fire and knocked down back to back three's in route to a 13-2 run to start the game. The team played great defense in forcing the Rams to turn the ball over. The Rams tried to get back into the game, but the Bruins offense seemingly couldn't miss as they continued to stretch their lead. The Bruins shot 47% throughout the first half from three-point range and used their smothering 1-3-1 defense to force tough shots. At the break, the team had a comfortable 41-21 lead.
"It had been a little while since we played on our home court. We had more of a sense of comfort being back home which helped us shoot well," Coach LeViere said. "It is hard for them to guard everyone and we got open looks and were able to hit those shots."
In the second half, the Bruins continued to shoot well, but the Rams began to chip away at the Bruins lead. The Rams eventually cut the lead down to 10 behind great play from Abigail Siemens who had 17 points on the night for CIU. After a timeout, the Bruins hit another three as seven different players on the Bruins roster hit a three-pointer throughout the game. Eventually the lead was back up over 20 points as the Bruins used their suffocating defense to force tough shots.
As the game ended, the Bruins had secured their seventh victory of the season with a 67-51 win over Columbia International University. "Defense is going to be a big thing to work on for us," Coach LeViere said. "To give up some of the things we did tonight didn't help us. We got beat in the rebounds tonight which usually doesn't happen to us. Overall I thought we played well and we got the win."
Kim Spiecker led the way for the Bruins with 14 points. Kourtney Hoefler chipped in 12 to go along with 6 rebounds. The Rams did a good job of limiting opportunities for Kendra Jeffcott as she finished with only 7 points. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 7-3 on the season. The team will have two games on the road coming up at the end of the week. The first of their road trip is coming up on Thursday night as the Bruins will battle Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina.
