Despite late first half run, BJU holds off Barber Scotia for road win

Box Score
The Bruins women's basketball team traveled to Concord, North Carolina for a matchup with the Barber Scotia Sabers on Thursday night. The Bruins and Sabers met earlier in the season with BJU getting the 61-43 victory in Greenville. The team is 7-3 on the season and were coming off a victory against Columbia International University on Tuesday night. The Sabers have struggled so far this season with a 1-12 record. The Bruins were looking to win their fourth straight as they took the floor in Concord.

From the opening tip, the Bruins began to control the tempo and gain the upper hand behind slick shooting from Kim Spiecker and Kendra Jeffcott. The Bruins owned the post with Kourtney Hoefler and Brianna Delaney controlling the block. The Bruins quickly jumped out to a 26-12 lead and felt comfortable in controlling the flow of the game. The floor conditions helped Barber Scotia get back into the game as the Bruins slipped on the floor for five straight possessions. "I felt like our girls should have been wearing cleats," Coach LeViere joked. "We just were not able to cut and move like we are used to." The Sabers capitalized on the Bruins turnovers as the team mounted a 16-0 run to take the lead 28-26. The Bruins fought back and went into the break ahead 32-30.

"We controlled things early on and I thought we really were working well together," Coach LeViere said. "Unfortunately we gave up several possessions and allowed them back into the game."

In the second half, the Bruins made adjustments in their defensive scheme and battled through to extend their lead. The team showed great composure as two Sabers players were called for technical fouls throughout the second half, and one was ejected from the game. As the half wore on, the lead became larger and larger as the Bruins asserted control. The final buzzer handed BJU their fourth win in their last five games.

"I am proud of our effort tonight," Coach LeViere said. "They really kept their composure in tough circumstances."

Kendra Jeffcott led the Bruins with 14 points while Kim Spiecker chipped in 10. With the win, the Bruins improve to 8-3 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will have another tough road battle as they travel to face Toccoa Falls College on Friday night.
