The Lady Bruins welcomed in Warren Wilson College on Tuesday night to the Davis Field House. The two teams met in Asheville last week with the Owls getting a last second jumper to beat the Bruins 60-58. The Bruins were coming off an impressive 62-33 blowout of Clearwater Christian College and looked to continue their winning ways against the Owls.
From the opening tip, the Bruins went right at the Owls and jumped out to an early lead. Kendra Jeffcott and Kourtney Hoefler dominated the paint as the Bruins took control of the game. "We really felt like we should have beaten them at their place," Coach LeViere said. "We knew if we came out and played our game we could beat them."
The Bruins got a great spark off the bench from Kim Spiecker who scored back to back three point shots to give the Bruins an early 26-13 lead. The team played suffocating defense as Bre Bullard shut down Owls leading scorer Dani Henderson. "I was still upset that she scored the last two points of the game on me last game," Bruins' guard Bre Bullard said. "I knew this game I had to shut her down." The team forced several turnovers throughout the first half and Kim Spiecker remained on fire going 4-4 from three-point range in the first half. "Our offense was making the defense move away from me," Spiecker said. "Before the game I wasn't really feeling it, but when I am wide open I know I need to take the shot. I was able to make it tonight." Spiecker hit her last three right at the buzzer to give the Bruins a 31-19 lead.
"We always talk about defense first and foremost," Coach LeViere said. "When we can have that hustle and solid play good things are going to happen."
At the start of the second half, the Bruins continued to pressure the ball and force turnovers. Hoefler and Jeffcott showed their dominance on the glass as the two combined for 27 rebounds. The Bruins executed on the offensive end and got several great looks which turned into points. The team shot 46% from three point range to continue to extend their lead over the Owls. At one point the lead was as large as 21 points and as the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had won their second straight game 62-33.
"When you can have rebounding and hustle and good play on the inside that's what we are looking for," Coach LeViere said. "We still had some trouble on the turnovers tonight but we'll get better in that."
With the win, the Bruins move to 7-12 on the season and are 4-2 in the second half of the season. Kim Spiecker led the way with 14 points, while Kendra Jeffcott and Kourtney Hoefler each notched another double-double for their season total. Jeffcott had 13 points and 14 boards, while Hoefler added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Bre Bullard added 10 points while shooting 43% on the night. The team will look to continue their winning streak as they welcome Piedmont International University on Friday night.
