Bruins Fall to Warriors 2-0

Another season, same result for the men's soccer team against SWU

Box Score

The Bruins opened their 2013 season on Saturday night as the team traveled to Southern Wesleyan University for a match with the Warriors. The two teams met last season in the historic inaugural game for the Bruins, which ended in an 8-4 victory for Southern Wesleyan. Coach Jesse McCormick and the team improved tremendously over the course of the 2012 season going 10-5-1. Southern Wesleyan was ranked #4 in the country in the NCCAA preseason poll and #21 in the NAIA preseason poll. The Bruins knew they were in for a tough battle as they took the field. In preparation for the match, the Bruins worked a lot on defensive positioning to contain the high-powered Warrior offense.

From the opening kickoff, the Warriors took control and began to work their deadly offense. Joseph Wooster got the start for the Bruins in net and he was tested early and often as the Warriors barraged the goal with shots. Despite the offensive pressure, the Bruins defense stood strong and kept the game even. Eventually, the Warriors would break into the scoring column first as Alejandro Sanchez netted a beautiful goal to put the Warriors up 1-0. The Bruins struggled to get anything going offensively as the team generated very few shots. As the half concluded, the Bruins were trailing 1-0.

In the second half, the Warriors continue to bring the pressure on the net. Bruins' goalie Joseph Wooster stood strong as he made 12 saves on the night. With the Bruins trailing, the team changed their offensive strategy with the hopes of drawing even with Southern Wesleyan. That shift caused an open opportunity late in the game for the Warriors as Jonathan Ruiz netted the goal to put the Warriors up 2-0. The buzzer sealed the victory for the Warriors and gave the Bruins their first loss of the season.

"There were moments during the game that we played well but overall it was not our best game," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "Joseph Wooster had a great game in goal, but we are definitely looking forward to our match Thursday."

The Bruins were able to generate only one shot on goal as the team struggled against the Warrior defense. Next up, the Bruins will play their first home match of the season as they welcome in St. Andrews University on Thursday night.
