Bruins Women Edge Eagles 1-0

Luttrell provides late boost to give Bruins second straight win

Box Score
The Bruins women picked up their first win of the 2013 campaign on Tuesday night over Point University 2-0. The team looked to continue their winning ways as they traveled to Toccoa Falls College for a matchup with the Eagles. Toccoa Falls entered the match Thursday with a 1-2 record. Their most recent match being a 4-3 loss against Ohio Christian University. The Bruins and Eagles met once in the Bruins' inaugural season with BJU capturing a 1-0 victory. The Bruins were hoping history would repeat itself as they took the field against the Eagles.

As the game began, the two teams went back and forth trading possessions and scoring opportunities. Once again, the Bruins defense stood strong behind the solid goalkeeping of Tori Anderson. The Bruins defense was able to keep the Eagles from getting many good looks, but the Bruins struggled to maintain possession in the first half. The Eagles played a very compact system of defense which prevented the Bruins from getting good looks on net. The half ended with the Bruins and Eagles locked in a 0-0 draw.

"We had several point blank shots on net that we just couldn't finish," Coach Carmichael said. "Overall we needed to do a better job possessing the ball against their defense."

In the second half, both teams looked to break the scoreless draw. The Eagles and Bruins each had several near goal attempts but still the score was even. Near the end of the half, the Bruins were beginning to think that another extra time game was in their future. The team had played two back to back double overtime games to start the season. Rebecca Luttrell then took advantage of the Eagles defense and scored her first goal of the season to put the Bruins up 1-0 late in the game. The Eagles tried desperately for the equalizer but as the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had their second straight victory.

"I am glad Becca was able to get a goal for us tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "My hats off to Toccoa though. They really played a hard fought match tonight."

With the win, the Bruins move to 2-2-1 on the season. Tori Anderson was rock solid in the net for the Bruins as she picked up her second straight clean sheet. The Bruins women will have a light practice on Friday before welcoming in Johnson University - Florida (formerly Florida Christian College) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
