The Bruins have been on a great run as of late winning their last five games while outscoring their opponents 19-1. Their most recent victory came in back-to-back victories over Ohio Christian University (1-0 W) and Kentucky Christian University (7-1 W) last Friday and Saturday. The Bruins offense has been working well, but the defense has been shutting down each offense they play and limiting opportunities for their opponents to score. Tori Anderson has been magnificent between the pipes as she has allowed only one goal which came on a penalty kick. The Bruins hit the road on Friday as they began a two-game road trip in Florida. Their first match was against the Johnson University of Florida Suns. The two teams met in Greenville two weeks ago with the Bruins getting the 8-0 victory at home. Coach Carmichael was set to play his players while keeping in mind the tough matchup against #1 Clearwater Christian on Saturday.
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins took control and showed they were going to be in the driver's seat for this game. Spencer Martin got the Bruins on the board early with a beautiful goal set up by Becca Luttrell. Martin scored again from an assist by Caitlyn Lehman to put the Bruins up 2-0. Minutes later the Suns mistake cost them an own goal to make it 3-0 Bruins. With minutes remaining in the first half, the Bruins scored again off a beauty by Tessie Estrella to go into the half up 4-0.
"Combination and off the ball movements were crisp and creative tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "Our players did an excellent job of finishing their chances today."
In the second half, the Bruins picked up where they left off in the first half and continued to barrage the Suns net with shots. Spencer Martin notched here third goal of the game to give her the hat trick off an assist by Isobel Johnston to make it 5-0. Later on in the half, Jenn Wise and Annie Ubben each scored to give the Bruins a commanding 7-0 lead. The Bruins defense did an excellent job of stopping the Suns offense as JU wasn't able to make a shot on goal throughout the entire second half. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had won their sixth match in a row with a 7-0 clean sheet of the Suns.
"It was great to see our system of play working well," Coach Carmichael said. "The possession rate was high and everybody contributed to this win. Our hats go off to Johnson University though for playing a well fought match. Now we'll rest and get ready for tomorrow."
Spencer Martin led the way for the Bruins with three goals and 1 assist. Tori Anderson completed her 5th clean sheet of the season. The Bruins now are 6-2-1 on the season. The team will have little time to celebrate this win as the team will play one of their toughest opponents of the season as they travel to Clearwater Christian College on Saturday. The Cougars were the NCCAA DII national champions last year and defeated the Bruins 2-0 in Greenville in 2012. The Bruins will be looking to keep their offensive firepower intact and will go for their seventh straight win tomorrow.
