#5 Bruins Draw with #1 Cougars 0-0

Defense stands strong for the Bruins, who remain unbeaten in last seven matches

The Bruins women played their second match of this two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon against the Clearwater Christian Cougars. The two teams met in 2012 with the Cougars blanking the Bruins 2-0. Clearwater went on to win the NCCAA DII national championship. The Bruins have been on an impressive run as of late winning their previous six matches while outscoring their opponents 26-1. The Bruins played on Friday night against Johnson University of Florida and came away with a 7-0 victory leaving their record at 6-2-1 while being ranked #5 in NCCAA DII. The Cougars are ranked #1 in the country with a 5-3 record. The weather was hot and humid as temperatures on the field were around 110 degrees.

At the start of the game, the Bruins struggled in maintaining possession and had several turnovers in the opening minutes. Both teams struggled with the hot temperatures and the fatigue started to set in early for all players. The Bruins tried to establish a good rhythm of play and were able to make several good runs on the Cougars net. Clearwater had several great chances but Tori Anderson made several key saves to keep the game even. At the half, the Bruins and Cougars were locked in a 0-0 draw.

"We created a number of opportunities to get a goal," Coach Carmichael said. "Both teams maintained a high work rate and were pressing despite the temperature conditions."

In the second half, the Bruins tried several offensive looks to switch up their attack and open up opportunities for their forwards. Everything they tried seemed to sail just wide as the Bruins couldn't find the back of the net. The Cougars also were desperately looking for a goal as Tori Hale and the Cougars offense had several near goals that sailed just over the net. As regulation time ended, the two teams were looking for the golden goal in overtime.

Both teams fought hard in the hot and humid weather, but through both overtime periods neither scored to end the game at 0-0. "In the end I am very satisfied with our performance," Coach Carmichael said. "The girls collectively helped us get a well-earned tie against last year's national champs."

The Bruins' record now stands at 6-2-2 as the team remains unbeaten in their last seven matches. Tori Anderson recorded her sixth clean sheet of the season and has now allowed only one goal in the Bruins last seven matches. The Bruins will rest and recover over the weekend before traveling on the road to Johnson University of Tennessee next Thursday night.
