Thursday night will bring plenty of excitement to Alumni Stadium as both Bruins soccer teams will host the St. Andrew University Knights. It will be the first time for the men and women's teams to play the same day this season, although regular season play has already begun for both teams.
The Bruins women's team plays first, with game time set for 5 p.m. Early on in last year's schedule, a brand-new Bruins team played the Knights in an away game, losing 2-1. However, the Bruins actually finished the year with a better record (7-10) than the Knights, who ended with a 5-9-3 record. This year, the Knights are ranked ninth in NAIA standings out of ten teams. Despite losing their first two games, the Knights will still bring a difficult set of challenges for the Bruins, with many returning seniors and a star freshman field for the defense. The women Bruins lost two pre-season games, but went into double overtime last Saturday night against a tough Emmanuel College team, tying the Lions 0-0 and showing their abilities to hold off on the defensive side.
Â
At 7 p.m., the men's team will play St. Andrews in the first match ever between the two teams. The Bruins are coming off a strong pre-season showing, winning both games and barely losing their first regular game last Saturday. St. Andrews has been seesawing in early play, winning one, tying one and then losing their last three games. Â Bruins head coach Jesse McCormick is looking forward to facing a new opponent, saying that this game will present some new aspects for his team. "In this situation it should be quality competition which will continue to challenge our team to play at a high level." He also added that in their last few games, St. Andrews has had numerous goal shots, showing that they are capable of presenting a strong offensive threat, but the Bruins are looking forward to playing a well-coached and prepared team.Â
Come out and support the Bruins as they host St. Andrews University at Alumni Stadium on Thursday night.
