The Bruins women's basketball team welcomed the Wesleyan College Wolves to Greenville Tuesday night. The team has been on an impressive three-game winning streak and stand at 14-5 on the season. The Wolves came into Tuesday's game having lost 8 of their last 10 and were 2-11 on the season. The two teams met earlier in the season with the Bruins winning handily 80-56. The Bruins would have to be at their best as they were missing three starters for this game. Kendra Jeffcott, Trisha Irving and Bre Bullard all were out due to injury. The team was looking to win their fourth straight as they took the court in front of the Bruin faithful.
Right before tipoff, both teams had to deal with a brief power outage that shut off some of the lights and the shot clock. When power came back on, the Bruins provided the offensive electricity as the team seemingly scored at will against the Wolves defense while jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The team played suffocating defense and forced the Wolves to turn the ball over. After a Hannah Tompkins jump shot, the Bruins took their first double digit lead of the game.
From there, the team never looked back as the Bruins continued to control the tempo of the game and work through their offensive sets for easy points. When the buzzer sounded, the Bruins had a comfortable 41-16 lead at the half.
"We knew we needed to shut down their main threat and we really worked on our defense this week," Coach LeViere said. "We were well prepared and did a great job of playing help defense to make them make difficult plays. We did a really good job finishing by rebounding well and going after the ball."
In the second half, the Bruins picked up where they left off as the team continued to increase their lead. The Bruins locked down Jasmine Davis, who is averaging 18 points a game for the Wolves. The Bruins continued to barrage Wesleyan College with points as several reserve players got quality minutes for the team. The Bruins led by as many as 38 throughout the course of the second half, and as the final buzzer sounded the team had won their fourth straight with a 68-38 win over Wesleyan College.
"Defense determines if you win and offense shows you by how much," Coach LeViere said. "That's an old saying that we apply and I felt like because of our defense tonight we were able to put the game away early. Defense really has been the common denominator on this winning streak."
Hannah Tompkins led the Bruins with 13 points and Maggi Ford scored 11. Ten different Bruins players scored tonight as the team shot 42% from the field throughout the game. With the win, the Bruins improve to 15-5 on the season. The Bruins will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Florida for a tough road test against Pensacola on Saturday night.
