The Bruins women's basketball team began the second half of their 2013-14 season as they traveled to Emmanuel College for a matchup with the Lions. The Bruins and Lions met earlier in the 2013 season in Greenville with the Lions hanging on for a 65-52 victory over the Bruins. Emmanuel has been dominant this season with a 10-3 record. The Bruins have been on a roll nearing the end of the first half of the season with the team winning four of their last five games with the only loss being to Emmanuel. The Bruins were looking to pick up an important regional conference win as they took the floor in Georgia.
The Lions came out strong from the tip and knocked down several three point shots to gain an early 11-4 lead. The Bruins responded by getting the ball inside to claw their way back into the game and were down 14-13 with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half. From there, the Lions went on a 23-3 run to gain the advantage and stretch the lead. The Lions shot 62% from three point range in the first half as the Bruins struggled to stop the scoring onslaught of Emmanuel. As the buzzer sounded, the Bruins found themselves trailing big in a 41-20 halftime score.
"We allowed them open looks to get on a roll," Coach LeViere said. "They are a very athletic, talented and disciplined team."
In the second half, the Lions picked up where they left off as the team went on a 6-0 run to continue to increase their lead. The Bruins struggled to get anything going offensively as the team shot just 26% from the field in the second half while committing 18 turnovers in the game. The Bruins were only able to cut the lead to 21 points as the Lions kept the pressure on. As the final buzzer sounded, the Lions had handed the Bruins their second conference loss of the season 75-45.
"They area tough opponent for our first game back from break," Coach LeViere said. We will look to learn from this and get ready for the next one."
Kendra Jeffcott was the only player to score in double figures for the Bruins with 11 points. Brianna Delaney and Kourtney Hoefler combined for 13 rebounds as the Bruins were outrebounded 43-27 in the game. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 11-5 on the season. The team will be on the road for two more games this week as they compete in Florida. Next up, the Bruins will take the court against Florida College on Thursday night.
