Box Score The Lady Bruins won their third straight match on Thursday night as the team defeated the Florida College Falcons 1-0 in overtime. "We got outplayed a little bit but we got the one we needed when it mattered," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We knew it was going to be a tight game but the girls did a great job to finish."
Jenn Wise scored the overtime goal to give
the Lady Bruins a 1-0 win over Florida College The Bruins and Falcons met earlier in the season with the Bruins coming away with a 2-1 victory in Florida. The team would continue to be hampered by injury as 5 starters would be out of the match tonight. The Bruins were riding a four game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) and were 9-3-2 on the season.
Both teams started the game slow as each traded possession back and forth. The Bruins struggled to gain offensive opportunities as the team only manufactured 5 shots on goal throughout the entirety of the match.
The Bruins defense was stellar as Ally Jenkins and Leah Edwards anchored an unshakable back line which didn't allow good opportunities to score. At halftime, the Bruins and Falcons were locked 0-0.
"We knew we had to press more towards the goal," Coach Carmichael said. "We needed to push for a goal and push numbers up. This was one of those nights where things didn't completely click for us."
The second half yielded much of the same as both teams struggled to generate shots. As the half wore on, the Bruins and Falcons knew this game was going to come down to the one goal which would separate them. The final buzzer sent both teams into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Bruins showed much more spark and moved the ball into the attacking third. A great through pass found the feet of Kaitlyn Hummel who was fouled just outside the box. On the ensuing free kick,
Jenn Wise bent a shot past the Falcons goalkeeper to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory.
"We wanted to do better than what we did tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "Our possession wasn't where it needed to be and we need to pull up our play before Saturday night. It wasn't the sharpest game but we'll be ready to go on Saturday and we'll be pumped up. We'll keep improving from what we did today."
With the win, the Bruins improve to 10-3-2 on the season. Jenn Wise recorded her first goal of the 2014 season as the Bruins improved to 6-2-1 at home. The team will welcome rival Clearwater Christian College on Saturday night.
