Lady Bruins Upset Cougars 1-0

Early goal by Jenn Wise is the difference as Bruins pick up big conference win

It was a battle of two premier teams in NCCAA DII as #1 Clearwater Christian College took on #2 Bob Jones University under the lights of Alumni Stadium. The two teams had met earlier in the season in Clearwater, Florida with the match ending in a 0-0 draw. This game would have more implications as the winner would most likely be the #1 seed in the NCCAA South Regional tournament in a few weeks. The crisp fall October air welcomed the two teams as the stage was set for the next chapter of this rivalry.

Caitlyn Lehman and the Bruins defense stood strong
to preserve the 1-0 victory over Clearwater Saturday night.
The Bruins didn't take long to get going as the team intercepted the kick and moved the ball into the attacking third. Caitlyn Lehman gathered the ball and sent a beautiful through pass to the feet of Jenn Wise who buried the shot to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead just 47 seconds into the match. "Our big goal in the match was to come out and notch a quick goal in the first five," Coach Carmichael said. "We saw some space and took advantage of it."

As the half continued, the Cougars looked to get back into the match as the team barraged Tori Anderson with 9 shots throughout the first half. The Bruins defense did an excellent job of clearing out opportunities.The halftime buzzer allowed the Bruins to cling to a slim 1-0 lead.

"We're still not playing at the top of our game," Coach Carmichael said. "Thankfully we're getting some people back healthy and we are able to adjust accordingly to slowly get back into our system of play."

At halftime, the Bruins honored the five seniors on the team who would be playing their last match at Alumni Stadium. Tori Anderson, Isobel Johnston, Victoria Musselman, Rebecca Luttrell and Caitlyn Lehman all were given special recognition for their contribution in helping to build the Bruins soccer program.

As the 2nd half began, the Cougars looked to steal momentum and get the equalizer. The team continued to pressure the net, but the one-two punch of Leah Edwards and Ally Jenkins continued to stand strong against the Cougars attack.In the 50th minute, Jenn Wise was called for a handball inside the box. This awarded the Cougars with a penalty kick. Kelsey Murphy's penalty shot was blocked by Tori Anderson to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Throughout the remainder of the half, the Cougars continued to pressure the net as the Bruins defense continued to stand strong. The Bruins had a few golden opportunities to extend their lead, but several key saves by Charity Nelson kept the lead at one goal.

The final buzzer handed the Bruins their fourth straight victory with a 1-0 win over rival Clearwater Christian College.


"Everyone did a great job and stepped up tonight," Coach Carmichael said. "Anytime we play Clearwater we know it is going to be a close one goal game. A great effort by our defense and overall a great performance."

With the win, the Bruins improve to 11-3-2 on the season and picked up an important conference win to give them a 2-1-1 record in conference play. The team will get some rest and recovery before playing an important conference match on Tuesday night at Toccoa Falls College. The Bruins were upset 1-0 earlier in the season by the Eagles. With a win, the Bruins would secure the #1 seed in the NCCAA South region for the regional tournmant in Florida in two weeks.
