Box Score There was much at stake for the Lady Bruins as they took the field in Georgia against the Toccoa Falls College Eagles. A win would give the Bruins the #1 seed for the regional tournament, giving them a first-round bye in the playoffs next week in Clearwater, Florida.
The Bruins had suffered the bitter taste of an upset earlier in the season as the Eagles stole a victory at Alumni Stadium 1-0. The Bruins have refocused since that loss and has been on a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1) including winning their last four matches.
As the game began, the Bruins looked to avenge their earlier season loss. The team would benefit from having many of their injured players back in the lineup as the Bruins looked to move into attacking position. Early on, good combination play allowed Tash Walters a great shot on frame but it was saved by Eagles goalkeeper Emily Truelove. The Bruins kept up pressure on the net, but each shot failed to score.
The Eagles rode the energy of the home crowd and began to possess well and move into the Bruins territory. The defensive line of Leah Edwards and Ally Jenkins stood strong as the Bruins forced tough shots. Both teams had quality chances throughout the half, but neither could find the back of the net as the score was 0-0 at the break.
"The team played collectively hard," Coach Carmichael said. "Although it took us a while to settle into the match, we finally started clicking towards the end of the half."
In the second half, the Bruins and Eagles began to feel the aura of deja vu as both teams remained scoreless. The Bruins were determined to not let a late goal ruin their chances. In the 55th minute, the Bruins received a free kick just outside the box.
Jenn Wise seized the opportunity and buried a bending shot into the back of the net to put the Bruins up 1-0.
From there, the Eagles desperately tried to claw their way back into the game but the Bruins defensive wall stood strong throughout the final minutes. The final buzzer handed the Bruins an important 1-0 win on the road.
"We have a team that continues to work through challenges," Coach Carmichael said. "Our hats off to Toccoa Falls as they played an unbelievably good match. Their work rate was second to none. Today was a culmination of the effort our team has given all season to win and they were rewarded with a chance to play for the regional championship." The Bruins improve to 12-3-2 on the season. Jenn Wise scored the lone goal for the Bruins extending her goal-streak to three straight games. With the win, the Bruins secure the #1 seed for the NCCAA DII South regional playoffs and will have a first round bye. The team will play the winner of the semi-final round between Clearwater Christian College and Toccoa Falls College. Before the regionals, the Bruins will close out their 2014 regular season on Saturday as the team will play St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
