Box Score The Lady Bruins soccer team has been on fire the last few weeks as the team has been unbeaten in their last seven matches including winning their last five. The team has outscored their opponents 12-2 during that span and was riding a consecutive three-game shutout streak. That all would end as the battled the St. Andrews University Knights on Saturday afternoon in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The Bruins allowed three goals in the first half as the Knights blanked BJU 4-0.
"We played well in spurts but just looked like we collectively didn't come to play against a very strong St. Andrews team," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We mixed up some of the positions to give our defensive line the chance to play up."
In the opening minutes, the Bruins were a bit outmatched by the Knights as SAU moved into the attacking third. The Knights struck quickly with a goal in the 12th minute by Chelsea Sang to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. SAU then used back to back goals in the 16th and 17th minutes to take a 3-0 advantage. The Bruins were not able to generate much offense as the team was outshot 14-2 in the first half. The halftime buzzer gave the Bruins a chance to talk things over as the team went into the break down 3-0.
"We made too many mistakes and poor decisions that lead to some of their goals," Coach Carmichael said. "Sometimes we were on but too much of the game was spent chasing the game and not maintaining composure."
In the second half, the Knights used a quick goal by Hayley Peck to take a commanding 4-0 lead. From there, the Knights went on the defensive and held the Bruins without a shot throughout the entire second half. Despite their efforts, the Bruins suffered a 4-0 shutout on the road.
"I am not worried about this match," Coach Carmichael said. "We know we still have to work hard this week as we get ready for the regional championship. All is good!"
With the loss, the Bruins finish their regular season play with a 12-4-2 record. The team will practice this next week as the team prepares to compete in the NCCAA DII South Regional Championship. The Bruins secured the #1 seed for the tournament and was granted the first round bye. The team will play the winner of Toccoa Falls College and Clearwater Christian College next Saturday.
