Lions Clip Bruins in OT 2-1

Team battles hard throughout the match, but falls to Emmanuel College on the road

Box Score
The Bruins were on the road Saturday night as they traveled to Emmanuel College for a match with the Lions. The team was coming off a 2-0 loss to Truett-McConnell College on Tuesday night. The Lions were riding a two-game winning streak and were 4-3-2 entering the match on Saturday night. The two teams had only met once during the 2013 preseason, but both teams looked to pick up an NCCAA South conference win as they took the pitch on Saturday night.

From the opening kickoff, both teams fought to gain possession. The Lions were able to challenge the Bruins net, but goalie Joseph Wooster and the Bruins defense did a great job of squelching opportunities. The Bruins were able generate opportunities as well but the team failed to generate a shot on goal all throughout the half. The first half would conclude with both teams looking for their first goal in a 0-0 game.

"We defended well in this game," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We needed to be a lot more aggressive in going to the goal, but overall Wooster played well."

In the second half, both teams looked to break the scoreless tie by working great combination play to generate shots. In the 67th minute, the Lions broke through as Martin Mitreski scored a goal and took the lead 1-0. The Bruins responded well as 6 minutes later Andrew Moisant sent a beautiful pass to Jared Simmons who buried the shot to even the match at 1-1.

The Bruins had several chances in the closing minutes but the match would go into overtime tied at 1-1. In the overtime period, the Bruins were caught by surprise as less than two minutes into OT, Alex Wright created space and bent a shot past Joseph Wooster to give the Lions a 2-1 victory.

"This was a hard fought game," Coach McCormick said. "There are a lot of good things to take away from it. Frustrating to lose in OT but overall proud of how our guys played today."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 3-6 on the season. The team was outshot 17-7 in the match. Next up, the Bruins will play the last of their three-game road trip on Monday evening as the team will battle Piedmont College on Monday night.
