Lady Bruins Drop 3rd Straight 59-42

Despite late run, BJU comes up just short against Emmanuel College

Box Score
The Lady Bruins battled conference opponent Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon and came up just short in a 59-42 loss. "They are a very good team," Coach Mike LeViere said. "Having said that, we should be able to play with them but today we didn't."

The Bruins were eliminated by the Lions in last year's NCCAA South Regional playoff. The Bruins were coming off back to back losses at the hands of Converse College and Erskine College. The Lions opened the 2014-15 season strong by winning their first three games and starting a perfect 3-0 on the season.

From the opening tip, the Lions came out strong and rode momentum to build a 23-3 lead. The Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game, but the shooting struggles continued as the team couldn't seem to score throughout the half. The Lions capitalized by executing their sets and continuing to increase their lead. At the half, the Lions were up 34-14 over the Lady Bruins.

"Once we woke up and started moving on offense and playing better defense we were fine," Coach LeViere said. "Unfortunately by that time we had dug quite a hole for ourselves."

In the second half, the Bruins came out strong and began to chip away at the Lions lead. The team got an extra boost as captain Kourtney Hoefler returned from injury and provided a rebounding boost with 7 boards on the night for the team. Kendra Jeffcott fought through the lane for points, and helped the Bruins cut the lead to 13. Each time the Bruins started to make a run, the Lions would come up with a turnover and score to keep the lead.

The Bruins rally came up just short as the final buzzer handed them their third straight loss with a 59-42 defeat. "We played great down the stretch but Emmanuel is not going to give up a 20 point lead," Coach LeViere said. "Hopefully we will have a better showing against them next time we see them."

Kendra Jeffcott provided the scoring boost for the Bruins with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Maggi Ford also chipped in 9 points and 8 boards. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 2-7 on the season and are now 1-1 in conference play. Next up, the Bruins will return home on Tuesday night as they welcome Johnson University to Greenville.
